ECOOP on a Budget
This page has information for students. ECOOP should be an affordable and enriching experience, if you have any questions or need assistance contact the organizers.
First-time to ECOOP? A big conference can be daunting, especially if you don’t know anyone. The best way to break the ice is to become a Student Volunteer or SV. As a SV you’ll assist the organizers, meet the speakers and talk to other students. Many of the researchers you will meet have been SVs themselves.
How much does ECOOP cost? Discounting travel which is variable, budget for registration (350€ if early), 6 nights (240€ at the hotel including breakfasts), ~4 dinners (40€). The conference provides food for breaks and lunch. Usually some dinners are part of the conference (though this depends on availability). So, at first glance you should make do with 640€. But, you can get that cost down! If you are a student volunteer, thanks to our industrial sponsors, the registration fee will be waived. For US residents, a NSF Conference Award will cover registration, and if you share a hotel room you can go to ECOOP for 200€ all inclusive (discounting travel). Student volunteers and US residents may also apply for complimentary accommodation at student dorms. For students who cannot afford travel, some limited travel support may be available.
Student Volunteer Program
Student volunteers (SVs) are vital to the efficient operation and continued success of ECOOP. The SV program is a chance for students from around the world to participate in the conferences whilst assisting us in preparing and running the event and in return are given free registration and access to all sessions. Cheap Accommodation
ECOOP has negotiated low-cost rooms with two hotels and at student dorms. The Hotel B&B Prague City is 39€ (or 25€ when sharing a room), Novomestsky hotel is ~42€ (or less when sharing a room), both including breakfast. The details are in the accommodation section. The cheap housing options are limited and available on first-come first-served basis.
Doctoral Symposium
Another activity we encourage students to sign up for is the Doctoral Symposium. This is an opportunity for getting advice from renowned researchers in the field. The application date is April 19th!
Travel on Budget
A very limited number of travel grants are available to cover a portion (but not all) of your travel costs. The major source of funding for these is the NSF and targets US residents. A much smaller amount of funding is available through ECOOP’s industrial sponsors. The key to cheap (or convenient) travel is booking well in advance. See our travel advice for planning the trip.
